Dr Margery Hertzberg Dr Margery Hertzberg, Dip Teach, BEd, MEd, DEd
President

Margery is a Lecturer in the University of Western Sydney’s School of Education. She lectures in ESL, Drama and Literacy across pre-service and postgraduate programs. Prior to this, Margery was Principal of a primary school and has also taught both ESL and mainstream classes in early childhood, primary and lower secondary settings. Her research interest is in the area of educational drama and literacy. She is interested in how this drama methodology enhances children’s language and literacy development - particularly ESL children in mainstream classes.

Dr Alyson Simpson Dr Alyson Simpson, BA, DipEd, GradDipLibSc, GradDipChilLit, MEd, PhD

Alyson is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education and Social Work (University of Sydney). She lectures in topics associated with English such as children's literature, children's language development, visual literacy and integrating literacy across the KLA in pre-service and postgraduate teacher education programs. She is an active teacher educator who works in research partnerships with schools. Alyson published her first book with the Primary English Teaching Association on how to encourage children's passion for reading in 2008.

Jon Callow Jon Callow, BA, DipEd, MEd, EdD
Vice President - Director Professional Development

Jon is an experienced teacher, having worked in primary schools, universities and in professional development for teachers. He has been teaching tertiary classes in the areas of primary English and multiliteracies, as well as areas of pedagogy and social justice. As a professional literacy consultant, he has worked alongside teachers in their classrooms, both in Australia and the United States. His research interests include children’s picture books, visual images, using digital media and promoting exemplary classroom literacy practices. He has recently completed his doctorate in the area of visual literacy. He is passionate about engaging an equitable education for all his students.

Robyn Wild Robyn Wild, DipTeach, BEd, BTeach (Early Childhood)
Director

Robyn has worked for the DET as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, literacy consultant and senior curriculum officer in the Early Learning Unit. She is currently on the committee of the Early Childhood Education Council as well as being on the e:lit board. She works casually with education students at the University of Sydney and continues to work as an independent literacy consultant with teachers across NSW. Robyn will be publishing her first book with e:lit in 2009.

Valerie Martin Valerie Martin, BA(Hons), GradDipEd, MEd
Director

Val is currently working as a Principal Liaison Officer for the NSW Department of Education and Training. Val was Principal of Crown Street Public School in Surry Hills, Sydney, from 2000-2007. She has worked in schools and universities and been a consultant for the NSW Department of Education and Training in multicultural and English as a Second Language education. Val has written, edited and contributed to many publications for the teaching profession. She is very interested in leadership development and school-based action learning.

Kim Self Kim Self, BA, DipEd
Treasurer

Kim is Relieving Principal at a South West Sydney school and has taught for 19 years in high NESB low SES schools. She has extensive experience in literacy education at a school, district and state level including as district Early Literacy consultant and has worked on the development of literacy and assessment documents for the DET and QTP. Kim recently worked in Literacy Test Development for the NSW state wide Basic Skills Test (BST) and English and Language Literacy Assessment (ELLA) and has worked on the National Testing Program (NAPLAN). In 2004 she worked as a visiting teacher lecturer in literacy at the University of Western Sydney.

 

Kerrie Reid Kerrie Reid, BEd, GradCertTESOL, MEd (Literacy)
Director

Kerrie is an experienced teacher, who has worked in catholic primary schools across the Archdiocese of Sydney. Kerrie currently works in the Curriculum Directorate of the Catholic Education Office, Sydney in the area of professional development as Project Officer for a literacy program. This program, ‘Language Features of Text Types for ESL Learners’, requires Kerrie to work with teachers and leadership teams in the development of whole-school structures and processes that focus on assessment, planning and programming for ESL students.

In addition, Kerrie has had considerable experience in the field of early literacy. As an Early Literacy Intervention teacher she has worked with classroom teachers, students and parents to improve student learning outcomes. Kerrie also works part-time with undergraduate students at the Australian Catholic University in the School of Education at Strathfield.

Mark Barraket , DipTeach
Director

Mark Barraket is Principal at Chullora Public School. He has been working for the Department of Education and Training for 17 years. Much of his experience has been working with school communities with high non-English speaking background populations and communities with a low socio-economic status. Mark has worked as a Priority Schools consultant and has worked with the Marrickville Community of Schools in Sydney Region on Middle Years initiatives with a focus on quality teaching and literacy.
Kathryn Cleary, BA, MTeach
Director

Kathryn is currently working as a Teaching Educator in the Catholic Education Office, Diocese of Parramatta. Kathryn works across Primary and Secondary schools to support teacher professional learning and build capacity in literacy and numeracy through teacher-led inquiry. Kathryn enjoys collaborating with teachers to design rich, integrated literacy experiences across Key Learning Areas supported by contemporary learning tools.

Kathryn has worked as an Associate Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Notre Dame Australia where she lectured in Information Communication Technologies for learning and teaching. Kathryn tutored in a range of pre-service courses including Primary English, PDHPE and H.S.I.E. Previously, Kathryn worked in Primary schools as a classroom teacher and as an ICT Integrator.

Kathryn is passionate about teacher-led development work. Her research interests include multiliteracies, critical pedagogy and teacher-led development work.
Lou Forsythe, BA, DipEd, GradCert WRAP, MACE
Director

Lou is currently the Head of The Armidale School (TAS) Junior School in northern NSW. She is an experienced primary teacher having started with the NSW Department of Education working in a range of country schools of varying sizes. Moving to the independent system to an all girls school before beginning at the co-educational primary school at TAS, has given Lou insights into many classrooms and teaching practices. Motivation and enthusiasm for children and their school communities have allowed Lou to enjoy the experiences each school has offered. She has a keen interest in providing relevant and practical professional development courses to fellow teachers, with the integration of literacy and IT into all areas of the curriculum being a particular focus.


Maureen Rooney , BSc, DipEd, GradDipApplFin&Inv
Director

Maureen currently works in Risk Management for an investment bank. She has worked in the finance industry for over 20 years, with the major part of her career spent as a trader and market maker for various merchant banks. Maureen also ran her own futures trading company for 5 years specialising in interest rate options. As an active and committed parent she is passionate about all students receiving the best education possible.
